Project To launch the Countryside Agency's national 'Market Towns Initiative,' aimed at regenerating England's market towns.

Objective

To launch the country's first pilot project in the Yorkshire and Humber region, in partnership with Yorkshire Forward - the Regional Development Agency - in order to:

Inform all local authorities of the new initiative

Generate enquiries from local authorities and local partnership organisations

Enthuse market towns to form partnerships between public and private sector bodies in order to regenerate these towns

Obtain private sector involvement.


Action

Announce a £6m 'Market Towns Initiative' in the Yorkshire and Humber region through:

A launch event in Malton, North Yorkshire

A high profile media campaign

Video production and a targeted mailshot

A newsletter.

Launch event attended by over 70 people representing local authorities from across the region.

Media

Over 1,525 column inches achieved including a front page lead story and inside feature in the region's main daily newspaper - the Yorkshire Post.

Front page coverage in all relevant regional evening newspapers.

Interviews on all local radio and TV stations in the Yorkshire and Humber region.

Partnerships

Applications obtained from most regional local authorities.

Six market towns chosen to receive up to £1m in financial support.
